Take Two Fish Oil and Call Me in the Morning

One of the most common questions we get when people find out that we don’t take medication of any kind and don’t even have it in our house: “What do you do if you have a headache???!!” Haha! Cracks me up! Our society is so used to medicating for everything under the sun that NOT medicating is a foreign concept! To me, that’s sad!

Just the other day, I woke up in the middle of the night with a horrible headache! Sinus pressure causing my whole entire head to throb! Did I run to the medicine cabinet and down a few Excedrin? Tylenol? Advil? NOPE! I did run to the “medicine” cabinet (which I’m thinking of renaming, since it has no medicine in it!) and downed a couple of fish oil soft gels! Guess what? Within 15 minutes I was feeling great and dozing back off! Shocker, I know, that you can get rid of a headache without one of those over-the-counter wonders that are harmful to your liver!

It’s true, fish oil is among other things good for relieving headaches because it works as an anti-inflammatory. Chiropractic adjustments can also help, but obviously that wasn’t an option at 3am! On some occasions, sleep or cold/hot compress can help. I’m sure there are many other natural remedies, but these are the ones I’m aware of so far! Try it sometime!

Living Free of Poo

Now, being a mother of a toddler, I’m certainly not talking about number 2, here! I’m talking shampoo. It’s going on 4 months since I’ve used shampoo on my hair! Am I dirty, oily or gross? Do I not practice good hygiene? Nope to all of the above! I just don’t want harmful, toxic chemicals in my body, and shampoo is one of the ways they make it in! Not all shampoos are harmful – there are plenty of healthy, natural shampoos out there that don’t contain these toxins, but they are very pricey! One other alternative is Liquid Castile Soap – it’s truly all-natural and safe to use (I use it on my kid), and can be used as shampoo, body wash, or even for household cleaner! It’s a great product for any home to have, especially homes that strive to be green! Here is a great video to watch about the dangers of many of the products we use every day. I encourage everyone to take the time to watch this GREAT video!

Does this look like dirty hair? No shampoo for 4 months! Not dirty, just healthy!

2 simple ingredients is all it takes!

So, about going “no poo” like I have, just google “no poo” and you can find tons of articles and blogs about how to do this! This and this are a couple of good ones I found. Obviously up to you whether you want to try this for yourself or not, but I love it! I LOVE the fact that I’m using natural, basic, cheap things on my head like baking soda and vinegar. Plus, as a bonus I found out that my once itchy scalp no longer itches! Must’ve had too much shampoo build-up or something – I don’t know, but it’s gone! My hair feels great and is able to maintain it’s own natural, healthy oils. Not sure I’ll ever go back to poo! 🙂

Making Your Home a Safe and Healthy Environment

Much, but not all, of what I will write about comes from an organization called Healthy Child Healthy World. This organization and it’s web site are worth their weight in gold! I appreciate so much what these people are doing to raise awareness about the many toxins that are creeping into our homes and lives and affecting our health and the health of our children! I feel this is so important that a friend and I hosted a HCHW party to raise awareness to our friends (find out more about hosting one of your own here) It is important to have a toxin free environment for all of us, but especially our little ones, because their small developing bodies are more greatly affected by toxins and chemicals. When I have a question about a safer alternative to something I used to use that I know is toxic, I search their web site or ask them on their facebook page and always come up with a very useful answer! They also have their own youtube channel that is very helpful! I have learned how to toss my harmful household chemicals and switch to safer (and sometime less expensive) methods. I have learned how to feed my child healthy/safer foods, and ingredients to watch out for. It is true that toxins are EVERYWHERE in our world today, unfortunately, but as parents we just need to start somewhere and work on one thing at a time in making our child’s world a little safer. I encourage everyone who is a parent, or even hope to be one day (toxins you are exposed to before they are even conceived affect them!!!), to look at the HCHW information and learn from it. Download and print their information sheets to keep on hand for useful and EASY tips! Do this for your child. Their health is worth everything! Watch this video!
